Sen. Margaret Dayton's SB243 passed through Senate committee, bringing us one step closer to the end of legally attended home birth in the state of Utah. It is a strange fact that the Utah Medical Association, which comprises physicians (including obstetricians), wrote this bill, which would require direct-entry midwives to follow UMA professional guidelines. This is a turf war, nothing more.
While Sen. Dayton insists that she is only looking out for our best interests without limiting choice, the "protection" she offers does just that. Who will win the big, bad boys in white coats or the moms who simply want to birth their babies in peace?
