A bill that would give $1.5 million to the Utah Department of Transportation to study east-west transportation in Salt Lake County passed unanimously out of the Senate Transportation Committee on Thursday.

HB108 is sponsored by Rep. Ron Bigelow, R-West Valley City. He said the bill is meant to help UDOT identify different improvements to east-west traffic routes, including possible construction of a new freeway.

A new freeway in Salt Lake County could displace up to 1,500 homes and businesses, according to regional transportation planners. Also included in HB108 is another $50,000 for UDOT to identify other parts of the state that need transportation studies.
