PROVO The Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library will host Guha Shankar, a folklife specialist in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the library auditorium.
Shankar's presentation for the Wilson Folklore Archive Founder's lecture will be "Re-visioning the Past: A Folklorist in the Film Archives." He will also show rare film materials from the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution.
Shankar uses his background as a visual anthropologist and his experience in producing educational media to examine the challenges of managing, preserving and providing access to archival film materials.
The Wilson Folklore Archive was founded by BYU professor William A. Wilson, who created a folklore collection containing more than 100,000 items. The archive is now part of the L. Tom Perry Special Collections.
Admission is free, and the public is welcome.
