Winner: Kudos to University of Utah researchers, whose work published this week in The Journal of Cell Biology furthered the effort toward understanding and, one hopes, curing a condition known as Lincoln's disease. The late president may have had this condition, which over time robs a person of coordination and motor skills. The condition has been found in 11 generations of the Lincoln family.
The U. researchers found evidence that the disease's gradual effects may be due to structural problems in neurons. Honest Abe would be proud. Loser: Perhaps we're missing something, but a judge's decision this week to release a Provo man with a long rap sheet, without posting bail, seems rather odd. Police served a warrant on Michael Pino's apartment and found illegal drugs in addition to many items believed stolen from homes, businesses and construction sites. Pino has 15 separate felony charges pending, and he has many neighbors living in fear. And yet 4th District Judge Claudia Laycock let him go because, as court administrators told this newspaper, she wondered whether police had enough evidence. Curious, indeed.
Winner: In a more positive crime story, police in Sandy were led to a large indoor marijuana garden this week by anonymous tips. The find has a street value of more than a half million dollars, and it may lead to other arrests. This is proof that, in some areas of Utah, anyway, neighbors can successfully eradicate problems.
