Classics by Ovid and Moliere are among stage productions opening on university and college campuses this week.

  • METAMORPHOSES, a compilation of 15 short pieces by Ovid, plays Wednesday through Feb. 17 in the Nelke Theatre of Brigham Young University's Harris Fine Arts Center, Provo.

Written by Mary Zimmerman and based on David R. Slavitt's translation of "The Metamorphoses of Ovid," the original Broadway production received critical acclaim during its 2002 run in New York City.

Directed by Megan Sanborn Jones, the 15 vignettes explore the themes of love and the human ability to change. An eight-member ensemble will play multiple roles.

Following Wednesday's opening, performances are 7:30 p.m. nightly except Sundays and Mondays. Tickets are $6-$10 (422-7664 or arttix.byu.edu).

  • TARTUFFE, French playwright Moliere's farce about an irreclaimable hypocrite, will have seven performances in the Morgan Theatre of Utah State University's Chase Fine Arts Center, Logan, Thursday through Feb. 17.

According to director Colin Johnson, getting the original production produced in the 17th century was almost as troublesome as the play's central character. The subject matter of religious hypocrisy was considered to be too offensive by the Roman Catholic Church, and it took Moliere six years to receive the play's official license from the Parisians.

The cast includes Jared Rounds as Tartuffe, Lacey Jackson as Emile, Jonathan McBride as Orgon and Lucas Bybee as Cleante.

Performances are Thursday-Saturday this week and Feb. 14-17 the following week, all at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and USU faculty or staff and $6 for all youths and non-USU students. Admission is free for students with valid USU activity cards (435-797-0305).

  • EXPERIMENTS IN INK VIII, the University of Utah Department of Theatre's eighth annual showcase of short plays developed by new playwrights — all directed, designed and performed by students — will be staged Thursday through Feb. 11 in Studio 115 of the Performing Arts Building (west of the campus bookstore).

The mix of plays offers an array of genres, from humor to horror. Some plays may contain adult themes and strong language.

    Performances will be Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with matinees at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11. Tickets are $5-$9 (581-7100 or kingtix.com).
