Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checketts had the team's new stadium put on hold earlier this week.

The Deseret Morning News asked readers to respond to the Real Salt Lake stadium issue. Below is a sampling:

Finally, Mayor Corroon had the guts to not fund the soccer stadium for RSL! It amazes me that some people think that their entertainment should be funded by Salt Lake County. — William

I support the RSL stadium project. No county has ever had a better proposal from a professional sports team period. The mayor behaved horribly during the whole process and only used it to promote himself. I wouldn't blame Dave Checketts one bit for selling the team after what the (county) council has put him through. — Robert

It would be nice to see Real stay, but this tax does not make sense. If it is such a good thing, why doesn't Mr. Checketts go out and raise the money himself? He has plenty of very rich friends. I just get tired of team owners dumping stadium burdens on the citizens. They can do this privately and they should. — David

As a fan and a local business leader I am extremely disappointed with Mayor Corroon's decision to not approve the public assistance for the construction of a stadium. The easiest decision is to say no. The harder and tougher is to say yes and construct a deal that is workable for both sides. The shame is on both sides for not working out a deal that both can agree on and know they can do.— Dale

I find it inconsistent for a city to embrace the worldwide nature of the Olympics, yet reject a sport with such an international dynamic. I was excited about the prospect of being a part of a worldwide soccer community, where you can find players and fans from many nations joining together in their passion for their sport. Real has the potential to give SLC a great amount of global exposure. Would that not be a great gift as we move forward into the new global economy? — NK

Mayor Corroon did absolutely the morally correct thing to do. Public funds should not be used to promote sports or any other type of professional activities. If the Real opportunity is such a great thing, then there is plenty of private money just waiting to make a killing on such a sure investment. If it is not a good investment for the private sector, then it should be left alone. It appears to me that Checketts just simply wanted a government entitlement or handout. — Ralph
