Game Watch: UNLV at Brigham Young

SHOWING UP: BYU should have little trouble with UNLV. The Rebels have given up 400 yards of total offense in nine consecutive games - just the cure for what ails the Cougars. It's homecoming in Provo, so the Cougar Stadium crowd should provide an additional boost as BYU seeks to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing 31-21 loss at Fresno State.

NO REPEAT OF 1981: In the less-than-storied history of UNLV football, a 45-41 upset of BYU 17 years ago at Cougar Stadium still tops the charts. The Rebels were unranked at the time and overcame a 41-21 deficit late in the third quarter to surprise the No. 8-ranked Cougars.

UNLV BEING UNLV: The Rebels are 0-5 in 1998 and have lost 10 straight dating back to last season. Even worse, UNLV has lost 23 consecutive games on the road.

The Edge

Quarterbacks

BYU's two-man attack of Kevin Feterik and Drew Miller is twice (and then some) as powerful as UNLV's one-time third-stringer, Chad Reed, who is scheduled to start. Edge: BYU

Running backs

Ronney Jenkins, who is coming off his second 100-yard rushing game of the season with 126 against Fresno State, should have a banner day. The Rebels aren't bad either. Dahrin Footman had a career-high 154 yards against Nevada. Edge: BYU

Receivers

The Cougars are catching on - literally. Dropped passes are no longer commonplace. Margin Hooks had five receptions last week. The Rebels counter with Damon Williams, who has caught passes in 39 straight games. Edge: BYU

Lines

BYU holds a distinct advantage on both sides of the ball. Preseason All-WAC honoree Talance Sawyer, a defensive end, is about all the Rebels have. Edge: BYU

Linebackers

BYU middle linebacker Rob Morris may be the WAC's best. The junior is well on his way to leading the Cougars in defensive points once again. Freshman James Sunia is one to watch for UNLV. Edge: BYU

Defensive backs

The Cougars should more than hold their own against a UNLV passing attack that completed just seven passes against Nevada. The Rebels defense gave up 253 yards passing. Edge: BYU
