Winners of the prestigious Newbery and Caldecott awards for children's literature were announced last week. They are:
Newbery Award for 2007: "The Higher Power of Lucky" by Susan Patron (Simon & Schuster). Honors: "Penny from Heaven" by Jennifer Holm (Random); "Hattie Big Sky" by Kirby Larson (Delacorte); "Rules" by Cynthia Lord (Scholastic).
Caldecott Award for 2007: "Flotsam" by David Wiesner (Clarion). Honors: "Gone Wild: An Endangered Animal Alphabet" by David McLimans (Walker); "Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom" by Kadir Nelson (Hyperion).
