Gift certificate measure passes House committee

A Utah House committee on Friday passed out a bill that requires gift certificates to disclose an expiration date or fees that can be deducted. Certificates that do not disclose that information on the certificate or its packaging will have no expiration nor be subject to a fee.

Sponsored by Rep. Wayne Harper, R-West Jordan, HB261 was passed out by the House Business and Labor Committee.

"If a business chooses to put it on, fine," Harper told the committee about the disclosure information. "If not, it's open-ended."

Language in an amendment clarifies that the bill does not apply to "instrument cards" or "network cards."
