I just read the article about Cottonwood Mall where mall manager Spence Angerbauer says they are "business as usual" despite the five most recent closures of retail stores and despite the fact they are only 60 percent occupied (Jan. 25). Mr. Angerbauer seems to think this is no big deal.
It is a big deal to me and my friends and neighbors who shop there. I have shopped at Cottonwood Mall for the past 50 years and walk there five mornings a week. When General Growth Properties bought Cottonwood Mall a few years ago, they immediately raised rentals, and some of my favorite stores moved out immediately. Since then, one by one, the retail stores have closed up or moved. I visited a store at Fashion Place Mall and was told its monthly rent had been raised from $6,500 to $8,500 and it was moving within the month.
Seems to me the owners are unwilling to spend any money at either mall and, so far, are unwilling to be honest with their renters and their customers.
