A House committee held a bill, HB104, that would outlaw all types of gambling and simulated gambling in taverns and private clubs, including poker tournaments or bingo nights where nothing is risked or won. The bill may get a second hearing if the sponsor, Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, can revise the language to address some committee member's concerns that this would too severely restrict any type of game.
The Utah Senate gave final approval to an overhaul of the state's child-support guidelines. SB23 has been criticized by noncustodial parents, who would see their monthly child-support obligations increase, in some cases by 25 percent, under the updated child-support tables. The measure now goes to the House.
A bill that would prohibit teachers from recommending to parents that their children take psychotropic drugs passed the House with a veto-proof majority. HB202 was amended to clarify that teachers can assist with medical evaluations needed for prescribing the behavioral drugs, but they are not able to give any recommendations to parents. An amendment that would have allowed teachers to give opinions if the parents initiated the conversation failed.
