WEST JORDAN Fire ripped through a twin home here early Monday.
Smoke detectors alerted the family at about 6:15 a.m. A couple and their 2-year-old child were able to get out of the home near 4400 West and 9000 South safely thanks to the smoke alarms, said West Jordan Battalion Chief Marc McElreath.
A second alarm was called out as flames made their way through the room. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
Damage was estimated at $100,000. McElreath said the home was a total loss. The other half of the twin home suffered only smoke and water damage. That home was vacant at the time of the fire.
Investigators say the fire started in the family-room area and its origin was electrical, McElreath said. But because of the extensive damage, investigators may never know if it was an overloaded outlet or wire short or exactly what sparked it, he said.
