Action taken by the Utah Legislature Friday morning:

  • A bill to repeal an in-state tuition break for undocumented students who have attended a Utah high school for three years was approved by the House Education Committee after more than 30 minutes of public testimony. Five representatives voted against HB244 after public testimony that pitted those calling for educational opportunities for undocumented students, against those who said the tuition break is unfair and violates federal law. The bill now moves to the House floor.

  • SB 33, which allows for special Gold Star license plates for families who lost members due to military service, passed the Senate Transportation, Public Utilities and Technology Committee. Sen. Carlene Walker, R-Cottonwood Heights, sponsored the bill.

  • SB 36, Sen. Pat Jones, D-Salt Lake, had her seat belt law make it through the Senate Transportation, Public Utilities Committee. Sen. Sheldon Killpack, R-Syracuse, and Sen. Scott Jenkins, R- Plain City opposed the bill.
