The recent global warming conference at Park City transfixed 1,500 anxious hand-wringers with dire warnings of the end of days by 2070 if the carbon spigot isn't shut off soon. I wonder if any mention was made of the generous carbon emissions generated in connection with the skiing business. We have thousands of luxury homes and vacation condos whose construction and maintenance require huge energy expenditures. Because walking in deep snow is tedious, millions of people jet and drive to the resorts, merrily emitting carbon along the way. The resorts themselves require the burning of coal to run the lifts.
The ski industry must be horrified at the prospect of reliving the famous conundrum heard during the Vietnam War: "In order to save skiing, we had to destroy it."
