New Mexico had a couple of chances to take the lead, but Giddens and Tony Danridge both missed shots, the latter with 18 seconds left.
The Utes called time to set up a play with the idea of Bryant taking the ball to the hoop and either dishing off to Green or taking it himself.
Bryant did the latter because Green was covered, but he ended up going slightly backward and flinging a wild shot over his head with about eight seconds left. The ball ended up in Green's hand on the left angle, but his long 3-pointer missed.
"We didn't have a lot of options without a low post presence," said Giacoletti. "We were going to try to take it at the ball screen and try to penetrate and kick it to Shaun."
In the overtime, the Utes had a chance to tie, down 79-76, but Eatmon missed a 3-pointer and then Daniel Faris scored inside to make it 81-76 with 53 seconds left.
Nevill only played 18 minutes before fouling out and finished with nine points and three rebounds. Incredibly he had three fouls in less than a minute early in the second half and after going out, made another foul just 17 seconds after checking back in.
"David was unbelievable and gave us a great lift," Giacoletti said. "David was more alive than Luke and had some juice."
Foster said, "It was great to be able to prove myself and step up and help the team out."
Next up for the Utes is 15th-ranked Air Force Tuesday night in the Huntsman Center. The team returned home immediately after the game on Jon Huntsman's jet to get a jump on the game.
