South Salt Lake has a new police chief.

Chris Snyder was confirmed by the City Council Wednesday night to head the department. Snyder had been serving as interim chief since the beginning of the year, when Beau Babka left to become Salt Lake County's undersheriff.

Snyder, who has worked his entire 16-year law enforcement career with South Salt Lake, said he plans to carry on Babka's vision and direction to serve the community.

"I'm ecstatic," he said. "I don't think it's quite hit me yet."

Snyder said he had always hoped someday to become a chief and that he is grateful for the support of his colleagues.

"I work for them and the community," he said. "I'm excited to keep things rolling."
