State charter school director stepping down
Leaders praise Broberg, say post will be hard to fill
State charter school director John Broberg will retire in March after holding the high-pressure post for more than two years. And state leaders say the vacancy he leaves will be hard to fill.
"I can see some major changes coming in the program with charter schools. It was a good time for me to go, and it would be a good time to get someone else in here and make this program theirs," Broberg said.
But he also admits that he's tired.
"It's a high-stress job, and you are working with charter people, legislators, the state people who want to go in multiple directions," said State Associate Superintendent Ray Timothy.
Plus, Timothy said a charter director reports not only to the state superintendent but to the state charter school board.
"He's done a great job. His strength has been ... bringing everyone back to the table and establishing a common sense of direction, bringing some unity with the state office and Legislature in establishing common goals," Timothy said.
Leaders said a major challenge is the state charter office's being understaffed. New charter schools have been opening by the dozens for the past few years, and there are only three staff members charged with compliance, training and ensuring the schools are successful while nurturing new schools.
"This year there are 14 schools that are brand new," Broberg said. "We do an excellent job of putting out fires, but we are not able to really move ahead and perfect the schools and provide all the support they need."
Currently more than 50 Utah charter schools are in operation.
However, Timothy said there is a chance money could be allocated for additional staff during the current legislative session.
A committee will review applications for the position this month and narrow the list to three. Superintendent of Public Instruction Patti Harrington will appoint a new director.
