What others are saying

Throughout December, when the BCS controversy swirled with great gusto, the disgruntled masses focused on Michigan and grumbled about the Wolverines' omission from the national championship.

After Boise State's 43-42 overtime victory over Oklahoma in Monday's Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, hindsight brings this thought: Perhaps everyone focused on the wrong team.

BCS, this spud's for you.

To all the naysayers, critics and loudmouths who said Boise State didn't belong in a BCS game, the Broncos have something to say today: Scoreboard, baby.

The separation of BCS, non-BCS — I think that era is over.

There's a vast difference in resources. According to U.S. Department of Education statistics, Oklahoma reported that its football program earned $33.7 million and spent $13.8 million in 2005-06, the most recent figures available. Boise State reported that its football team earned $8.5 million and spent $4.5 million.

The greatest bowl finish ever. Any doubters? It can be said with some certainty that a former Episcopalian nursing school has never won a $17 million BCS bowl with a Statue of Liberty play.

Or that the same 11-year-old Division I-A program tied the biggest game in its history with seven seconds left in regulation on the old hook-and-ladder play. Certainly no one can tell you they've seen a former walk-on receiver throw an overtime touchdown pass on fourth down....

Armed with a "we may never be here again" attitude, Boise State captured the biggest mid-major college football result since BYU won the 1984 national championship.

The Broncos' lively overtime shocker of Oklahoma underlines not only the promise of a playoff when it comes — and it's coming — but also the complexities.
