Ashton also counseled his replacement to be a steward of the public's money. "Even in an $800 million budget, every penny belongs to somebody else," Ashton said.
Other new elected officials sworn in Tuesday include auditor Jeff Hatch and surveyor Reid Demman.
Six incumbents were also sworn in after successful re-election bids. Councilmen David Wilde, a Republican, and Joe Hatch, a Democrat, will serve another four-year term. County clerk Sherrie Swensen, assessor Lee Gardner, recorder Gary Ott and treasurer Larry Richardson were also sworn in Tuesday after election wins.
Councilman Jim Bradley missed the swearing-in ceremony, as he was on vacation in New Orleans. The at-large representative on the County Council plans an informal ceremony today in the clerk's office. He beat out former Taylorsville Mayor Janice Auger in November to win another six years in office.
Mayor Peter Corroon, meanwhile, had a tidbit of advice for both the old and new elected officials: "Just remember we work for the citizens of Salt Lake County," he said.
