Herbert's home on past-due tax list
Herbert's tax bill was $2,107, plus a $42.12 late penalty. Taxes were due Nov. 30. The county posted a list of 13,000 delinquent tax notices on Friday.
Herbert's wife, Jeanette, thought she had paid the bill, his spokesman Joe Demma said. No delinquency notice had been sent to the Herberts.
"To her knowledge, she paid everything," Demma said. "She has a carbon copy of a check she wrote on Nov. 18 for $2,100 and change."
The bill and penalty were paid off on Friday, according to the Utah County Treasurer's Office.
The county collects property taxes on behalf of 46 entities, including school districts, special service districts and redevelopment agencies.
Tax notices for the county's 142,000 property parcels are mailed in October. Tax collections for 2005 totaled $233 million. Taxpayers can pay off balances and penalties without interest until Jan. 16, 2007.
"Sometimes people are a little bit late so they do go on the list, even though they're good, taxpaying citizens," Commissioner Larry Ellerton said.
