Some cities, such as Alpine, Highland and Elk Ridge, have banned beer sales in their communities outright. In American Fork, Lindon and Salem, beer sales are permitted during the week but banned on Sundays, with no provisions for when New Year's Eve falls on a Sunday.

Provo, Orem and Pleasant Grove also ban Sunday beer sales, although those cities make exceptions when Sunday is also New Year's Eve. In Orem and Pleasant Grove, beer sales will be allowed from 6 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday. In Provo, they are OK from 9 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday.

In Eagle Mountain, Payson, Santaquin, Saratoga Springs, Spanish Fork and Springville, beer can be sold on Sunday just like any other day.

With all the varying laws in effect though, officials still have just one piece of sage advice for anyone looking for a party on New Year's Eve.

"I guess the only advice I would give is, if you're going out to a party where alcohol is being served, make sure you have a designated driver," said Kenneth Wynn, director of the Utah Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
