A sacred place in Mecca

Tens of thousands of Muslims surround the Kaaba, or sacred house, inside the Grand Mosque in Mecca Wednesday. Every Muslim is expected to make at least one pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca in his lifetime. The cube-shaped Kaaba is the center of circumambulations performed during the hajj, and it is toward the Kaaba that Muslims face during their prayers.
