Bonneville High drug raid yields surprising results
The officers walked away empty handed.
"I'm not disappointed but surprised," Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Kevin Burns said Wednesday. "I was expecting to come out of there with more in hand."
Burns said he still considers the search a win.
"They know we're watching them. They know we'll give them some attention," he said.
Investigators with the Weber County Sheriff's Office and the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force began looking into drug dealing at the school with a list of names of students possibly involved. On Tuesday morning during second period, deputies said they converged on Bonneville High and began searching lockers and pulling students out of class.
No one was arrested at the school, but deputies confirmed there are five teens who will likely face drug possession and paraphernalia charges. They will be referred to juvenile court and face action from the school district.
"We did recover some paraphernalia on some folks," Burns said. "One kid said, 'I've got some at home.'"
Deputies said the timing of the raid may have been off, but he does not believe any suspected dealers had been tipped off about the police raid.
"We didn't find anything at the school, which is a good sign," Burns said. "But it's got to be somewhere."
Bonneville High School's principal said she had parents call to express appreciation for the search, applauding proactive steps to keep school safe.
"I think we got a strong statement across. There are a lot of things you can do in a school to keep a school safe and that is eliminate any drug problems," said principal Leslie Meyer. "It sends the message, 'Don't bring them here.'"
