NEW FILMS FRIDAY

THE BRIDESMAID — *** — Filmmaker Claude Chabrol's latest mystery-thriller turns out to be a surprisingly good character piece. French with subtitles, running time: 106 minutes, not rated, probable R (profanity, vulgarity, nudity, brief sex, brief drugs)

THE CAVE OF THE YELLOW DOG — *** — This low-key, naturalistic drama from Mongolia is a simple story told simply, and very well. Mongolian with subtitles, running time: 93 minutes, not rated, probable PG (violence, vulgarity)

CHARLOTTE'S WEB — ** 1/2 — A few irksome crudities dog this E.B. White adaptation, though there is still some magic left in the story. Running time: 96 minutes, G (violence, vulgarity)

DRIVING LESSONS — * 1/2 — Both vulgar and labored, this comedy is not exactly an ideal vehicle for "Harry Potter" co-star Rupert Grint. Running time: 98 minutes, PG-13 (profanity, vulgarity, violence, brief drugs)

ERAGON — * 1/2 — The only real difference between this fantasy and those laughable Sci-Fi Channel movies is the cast (Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich). Running time: 104 minutes, PG (violence, brief gore, vulgarity)

(F-WORD) — ** — Those who can stand a constant barrage of swear words will be interested in parts of this documentary about obscenity. Running time: 90 minutes, not rated, probable NC-17 (profanity, vulgarity, sex, nudity, violence, gore, racial epithets)

FACING THE GIANTS — ** — The religious proselytizing in this football movie is about as subtle as a blindside hit by a 300-pound defensive end. Running time: 111 minutes, PG (adult themes) —Jeff Strickler, McClatchy Newspapers

FUR: AN IMAGINARY PORTRAIT OF DIANE ARBUS — ** — It's tedium that really dooms Steven Shainberg's grinding, well-meaning failure. Nicole Kidman stars. Running time: 122 minutes, R (nudity, sex, profanity) —Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Daily News

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS — *** — The onscreen relationship between Will Smith and his son Jaden Christopher Syre Smith helps fuel this surprisingly involving and moving drama. Running time: 116 minutes, PG-13 (profanity, violence, brief drugs)

TIME TO LEAVE — *** — There are cliches, but this gay-centric drama has moments of raw, wrenching emotion. French with subtitles, Running time: 85 minutes, not rated, probable R (sex, nudity, profanity, drugs, adult themes) —Steven Rea, The Philadelphia Inquirer
