Preps of the week

SAM HOOPES, Duchesne: Barely a month removed from helping Duchesne capture its first football state championship in school history, this senior forward has the Eagles eyeing another state title.

After dropping its opening game of the season, Duchesne's basketball team has ripped off four straight wins and Hoopes is a big reason why.

Last week at the 1A Preseason Preview in Richfield, Hoopes racked up 23 points in a victory over former No. 1 Layton Christian, and followed it up with an 18-point performance in a win over then-No. 3 Piute.

Hoopes ranks seventh in 1A so far this year with an 18.4 scoring average. As a junior last basketball season, Hoopes was named a Deseret Morning News second-teamer.

DANI HOSKING, Davis: This junior scored 27 points against one of the state's best defenses last week, but she was disappointed nonetheless.

"She didn't care that she scored 27 points because we didn't win," said Darts coach Amy Wright. "She's a coach's dream, but she's also her teammates' best buddy."

A hard worker on and off the court, Hosking maintains a 3.99 GPA while leading the Darts to a 4-1 record and a No. 5 ranking with her consistent play. She is among the state's leading scorers with an average of more than 17 per game.

"She just keeps continuing to develop, and she doesn't consider herself above anyone else," Wright said.
