• The recent record cold has many wondering about their gardens. While it was unseasonably cold, it was not record cold in terms of the ultimate low temperatures. There is nothing you can do after the fact to save your plants.

It is a good idea to mulch tender plants, including roses, before we get additional cold. Form a cone of soil or mulch that covers the center of the plant. This will protect the graft union, and even if the canes die back, the plant will recover. If the graft union dies, you are left with a rootstock rose.

• Don't be concerned if your spring blooming bulbs emerged from the soil before the snow fell. They are perfectly hardy, and even if the leaves get a little damage, the flowers will be just fine.
