South Salt Lake Police Chief Beau Babka is apparently on his way to the No. 2 position at the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The Deseret Morning News has confirmed through several sources that Babka has accepted an invitation from Sheriff-elect Jim Winder to become the county's new undersheriff.

South Salt Lake police would only release a statement Wednesday that Babka had made some sort of decision regarding the undersheriff position but wanted to talk to his officers first and would defer all other comments to the sheriff's office and Winder.

Winder, through the sheriff's office's spokesman, Lt. Paul Jaroscak, was equally noncommittal Wednesday, only saying that he was "still in the process of putting a management team in place" and "will not be making any announcements at this time."

Jaroscak said Winder expected to make some announcements in the coming weeks.

Rumors of Babka being considered for the undersheriff position had been running strong for more than a week.

Winder was elected sheriff in November, defeating 16-year incumbent Aaron Kennard.

Babka was sworn-in as South Salt Lake's new chief in January.
