Salt Lake to name street for Adam Galvez

The Salt Lake City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to rename 300 South between I-15 and Redwood Road "Adam Galvez Street," in honor of the 21-year-old Marine corporal and Salt Lake resident killed earlier this year in Iraq.

The name change — which, despite showing up on road signs, will be symbolic only and will not change postal addresses or other official business — is the result of an Eagle Scout project by 15-year-old East High sophomore Junior Cruz, who lives in Galvez's neighborhood.

The city will put a moratorium on receiving new applications for honorary street names while city staffers work out a new policy regarding the changing of street names. The new policy will spell out such things as whether name changes should be limited to historical figures or events and school mascots, whether major thoroughfares should be included or if name changes should be limited to side streets, and if name changes should have a different application fee.

The policy review comes in the wake of a higher than usual number of name-change requests. The council is expected to approve renaming part of 100 South "Japantown Street" in a coming meeting.

The current street-naming policy requires applicants to pay a $250 fee. The council votes on proposed street names after a recommendation has been forwarded by the city's planning division, based on such things as nearby property owners' support for the change and any effect on utilities or mail delivery.

Galvez's parents attended Tuesday's meeting and received a standing ovation from council members and the audience.
