Mayor Rocky Anderson and others have been opposed to the skybridge over Main Street, partially out of aesthetic reasons and partially out of fear that a skybridge would "kill" Main Street businesses. They are missing the vision of the potential a skybridge brings with it.
Ideally, a beautifully designed skybridge would enhance the city. It would be a vantage point to look north toward the Main Street Plaza and foothills and south into the rest of the city and valley. I envision tourists stopping there for photos, families gathering to appreciate the view and history a real centerpiece to the city. A skybridge would be a unifying piece that would put the ghosts of Crossroads and ZCMI to rest.
The other objection seems to be that a skybridge would siphon off foot traffic. One look at the nearby Gateway should alleviate that concern. There we have a two-story development with skybridges and both levels of stores seem to have plenty of customers. The key to a vibrant Main Street will be the variety of stores and access to their storefronts.
