An early morning fire damaged a construction trailer at 1235 N. Beck St., but two people who were inside got out without injuries. The fire was spotted by people passing by who saw flames coming out of the windows and called for help at about 12:45 a.m. on Saturday. The fire was quickly extinguished.
"It was a smouldering fire in a couch, most likely caused by cigarettes and transients," said Denny McKone, public information officer for the Salt Lake City Fire Department.
McKone said the area is filled with construction trailers and, when the weather gets cold, transients often try to get inside them to get warm.
McKone estimated the fire and smoke damage to the trailer at about $9,000 to $10,000.
