Knights survive tough contest with Springville

SPRINGVILLE — It wasn't pretty, but the Lone Peak girls basketball team finally walked away with a win against Springville, 55-46, on Friday.

It was a rough-and-tumble game, leaving most every girl who took the court on both sides bruised and battered. And the fouls followed as the two teams shot a combined 46 free throws in 32 minutes.

"It was a very physical game," said Lone Peak coach Keith Flood. "Last year we would have gotten frustrated and lost our heads. This year we kept our composure and did what we needed to do."

As a matter of fact, it was his 10th player into the game who steadied the Knights. Kati Oliverson came in during the third quarter and with her second layup, extended the Knights' lead from a precarious three points to five.

"We have a lot of depth," Flood said. "Oliverson is an amazing athlete with good skills that continue to develop."

And it was the ninth player onto the court for Lone Peak, Stephanie George, who calmly drained a 3-point shot with .4 seconds remaining on the clock before halftime, giving the Knights what they thought was a comfortable 30-21 lead.

Ryan Littlefield also came off the bench to provide defense and rebounds. She also came up with eight key points.

But the starters came to play too, as team-leader Caitlyn Sears put together a 17-point night despite the stop-and-go nature of the contest.

Shannon Harmer added seven points and a trey.

The Lone Peak defense couldn't stop Ashley Kroneberger, who poured in 22, or Ashley Ereksen, who added 13 for the Red Devils. Laken Lewis was 8-of-8 from the free throw line for Springville.
