This three-CD collection is like an '80s nostalgia radio station. The Miami Sound Machine's "Conga," Daryl Hall & John Oates' "Out of Touch," Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl," Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up," The Pretenders' "Back on the Chain Gang" — all you need for a night of pogo dancing, day-glo clothes and moussed hair. — S.I.

VARIOUS; "What It Is: Funky Soul and Rare Grooves From the Vaults of Atlantic, Atco & Warner Bros. Records" (Rhino) ****

This box set attempts to set straight the history of funk. Nearly everyone has heard of James Brown, Sly Stone and George Clinton. But what about Rufus Thomas ("The Memphis Train") Eldridge Holmes ("Pop, Popcorn Children") or The Fabulous Counts ("Jan Jan")? Rhino has mined the archives for four CDs' worth of exciting body-moving songs, including such notable soul musicians as Earth, Wind & Fire, Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard and the early Commodores. Includes a booklet with extended liner notes and commentary on each of the 91 tracks. — S.I.

FATS WALLER; "If You Got to Ask, You Ain't Got it!" (Bluebird/Legacy)****

Story continues below
That infectious "Honeysuckle Rose" guy is well represented with three discs here, "Fats Waller Sings and Plays Fats Waller," which is my favorite; "Strictly Instrumental," which dares you not to get up and dance ... or at least tap your toes; and "Fats Waller Sings and Plays Around With Tin Pan Alley," which pulls together some great old tunes, including "She's Tall, She's Tan, She's Terrific," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and the anthem of the era, "'Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness If I Do." — C.H.

WEATHER REPORT; "Forecast, Tomorrow" (Columbia/Legacy) *** 1/2

Weather Report core members Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul got together in 1970, resulting in a new sound called "fusion." With three CDs and one DVD, this is a shimmering box-set overview of the group's career, from "In a Silent Way" to the DJ Logic remix of "125th Street Congress," and the DVD documents a set during the 1978 Birdland Tour. — S.I.

BOB WILLIS AND HIS TEXAS PLAYBOYS; "Legends of Country Music" (Columbia/Legacy) ****

If wild fiddler Bob Willis were still alive, he'd be 101. But his groundbreaking country/jazz/rock music lives on in this four-CD box set. "Steel Guitar Rag," "New San Antonio Rose" and "Corrine Corrina" are among the 105 remastered tracks, concluding with recordings from the music pioneer's last session in 1973. — S.I.
