Teen to face charges as adult in gun incident

A 16-year-old boy has been charged as an adult after being accused of bringing a handgun to Highland High School last week.

Because the teen has twice been committed to Decker Lake, a juvenile secure care facility, and was on parole from a prior felony theft conviction, he incurred steeper charges, which were filed in 3rd District Court Wednesday.

He now faces charges of possession of a weapon by a restricted person, having a weapon on school premises, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon by a minor.

An anonymous tip led police to the boy as school was starting on Nov. 15. He was arrested and a .22-caliber handgun was retrieved from his backpack, which was in a classroom at the school.
