Worker dies in fall down elevator shaft

ALPINE (AP) — A construction worker died and another was critically injured when the two men fell down an elevator shaft while working on a new home Monday, police said.

Both were working in the four-story home when the scaffolding they were on collapsed around 9:45 a.m., said Alpine Police Sgt. Dave Boerner.

"Apparently the scaffolding gave way and both tumbled at least 40 to 50 feet to the basement," Boerner said.

One of the workers was flown to University Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he was pronounced dead, Boerner said. The other was listed in critical condition.

The men's names were not immediately released.
