The redistricting committee, which is set to continue meeting Tuesday, was given four proposed maps to consider but not the one drawn up by the governor and legislative leaders. Bramble said that map had too many people in some districts.
Roskelley said that map was an attempt to come up with a proposal quickly and was never intended to be final. "Our intent was always to have the Legislature create the map," she said. "That map was never intended to be the map."
The first day of the redistricting commission drew little public interest, with only about a half-dozen people attending the meeting. However, those in the audience included staff members for Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, while Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, came afterward to look at some possible maps with Bramble.
Following the morning meeting, committee members adjourned to two separate "war rooms" one for Democrats and another for Republicans where they could use computer models to amend the current maps or draft their own. The computers contain Census data from 2000 but do not include any political information about voting trends or party membership.
"Because we are a state with a high concentration of urban population and a lot of rural area, I like the plan with a mix of rural and urban," he said. The current three districts adhere to the rural-urban mixture.
