High school put on alert during handgun scare

Highland High School went on alert after a student was arrested on suspicion of bringing a handgun to school Tuesday.

After a rumor about the gun spread through the school, students informed authorities, and officials say they caught the 16-year-old with the gun in his backpack on Wednesday.

Police told KSL-TV the boy was taken to a juvenile detention center and that the situation remains under investigation. The boy did not resist when he was apprehended, police said, but they noted that the boy has a prior criminal history.
