KAYSVILLE — Bradley Caldwell was appointed to fill a vacant seat in the Kaysville City Council following a special council meeting Tuesday.

Caldwell, an LDS Seminary teacher at Kaysville Junior High School, takes the place of Casey Hill, who resigned in October to take a job with the American Heart Association. At the close of the nearly four-hour council meeting, Caldwell said he felt "overwhelmed" and "totally honored."

During the meeting, the candidates had two minutes to introduce themselves and then took questions from the remaining council members and mayor. Originally, 18 people had applied for the vacant seat, said Mayor Neka Roundy, but three dropped out before the meeting, and two were unable to attend.

"I'm here for one reason and one reason alone: to help maintain the Kaysville I've always known," Caldwell said during his interview.

Caldwell is the second member of the City Council appointed to his seat instead of being elected this year. After Roundy, a former council member, was elected as mayor in 2005, Mark Johnson was appointed to take her place.

Caldwell will serve the remainder of Hill's term, which expires at the end of 2007, but he said he plans to run for election in November.
