Utah State

CROSS COUNTRY: Utah State's Vance Twitchell was named Tuesday to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-Mountain Region team. Twitchell, a senior from Helena, Mont., was one of 25 runners named to the team after he placed 24th at the regional meet last weekend.

GYMNASTICS: A couple of Olympus Gymnastics (Sandy) teammates have signed national letters-of-intent to compete for coach Ray Corn in the 2008 season.

Maegan Snodgrass is a senior at Bingham High who was 15th all-around at the regional championships; and Christa Drury is a Hillcrest High senior in her second season of Level 10 competition and the 2006 state champion, 27th at regionals.

Snodgrass plans to be a pre-med major. Drury wants to major in physical therapy and said, "It has always been a dream of mine to go to USU. I'm really excited that we can continue to help each other. We have been teammates for a very long time."

VOLLEYBALL: Utah State's women's volleyball coach Grayson DuBose announced Wednesday the signing of Katie Astle, Chelsea Fowles, and Lori Wilson to National Letters of Intent to compete for the Aggies beginning in the 2007 season.

Astle, a 6-1 middle blocker from Skyline High School earned first-team all-region and 5A all-state honors this year after helping Skyline to a fourth-place finish.

Fowles, a 5-10 setter from San Benito High School in Hollister, Calif., earned first-team all-league honors as both a sophomore and junior as she led her team to the league championship in 2005.

Wilson, a 6-1 outside hitter from Provo High School earned first-team all-state honors in 2005.

Southern Utah

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Southern Utah's Steve Barnes has been named the Mid-Continent Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performance in last Friday's 76-73 win at Utah. Barnes, a senior guard from Cedar City leading the Thunderbirds with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. He also led the team with six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Brigham Young

VOLLEYBALL: With second place in the Mountain West Conference on the line, the No. 20 BYU women's volleyball team will conclude the regular season this weekend at Colorado State on Friday and Air Force Saturday. At 22-4 overall and 11-3 in league play, BYU will be playing for seeding in both the MWC and NCAA Tournaments.
