Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has issued a proclamation declaring November American Indian Heritage Month and the Monday before Thanksgiving as Indigenous Day.
Forrest Cuch, director of the Division of Indian Affairs, said schools are encouraged to call special attention to the history of Utah's American Indians.
"This is the time of year that we can call attention to the heritage of the American Indian in Utah and honor the state's five Indigenous nations: Goshute, Navajo or Dine', Paiute, Shoshone and Ute," he said.
Activities this month include a powwow Saturday at Salt Lake Community College, 4600 S. Redwood Road, from noon to 11 p.m. General admission is $4, or $2 for students and children.
The state will host an Indigenous Day award celebration on Nov. 20 at the Red Lion Hotel, 161 W. 600 South. The event begins with a 6 p.m. social hour. Tickets are $10 per person or $15 per couple. For more information, call 538-8808.
