Lake search for pair may resume

Efforts to find and recover the bodies of an Orem couple believed to have drowned on Strawberry Reservoir may resume today if the weather is better, authorities said.

The ongoing search for Steven Roundy, 29, and his wife Catheryn, 23, was called off at about 1 p.m. Saturday because of high winds, said Chief Deputy Todd Bonner of the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office.

"We were getting snow and heavy winds, so we pulled the boats of the water," Bonner said. "We called it off for the day. We'll let everybody get home and get some rest."

The Roundys were last seen swimming toward shore Wednesday after their 14-foot aluminum boat filled with water and capsized in a sudden storm. Their boat also has yet to be found.

Steven's brother Kimball Roundy and Mike New were able to grab a gas can and a life jacket, and kick their way nearly two miles to the shore in 40 degree water.

Bonner said the search for the Roundys will continue, possibly today if weather permits. He said calm water is needed to search the bottom of the lake with sonar.

"We will be up here any chance we get, if there is no wind," he said. "Snow doesn't bother us, but wind dampers our search effort."

Meanwhile, authorities were still working to identify a body found late Friday evening, believed to be a person who had been missing since 2001. Emergency dispatchers told the Deseret Morning News that deputies are having to wait for dental records to make a positive identification on the body.

The Wasatch County Sheriff's office was aided by Wasatch Search and Rescue, Summit County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue, the U.S. Forest Service and Department of Public Safety divers. As many as 200 volunteers have searched the shore, and family members have also helped.
