Convention centers vote is delayed

County commissioners approved a slightly changed resolution on Tuesday in favor of the project. Commissioners called the resolution a step to moving forward in working with Provo to provide a convention center.

The county recently co-commissioned a study with Provo into the need of a convention facility in the area.

Though the county has more than one convention center proposal before them, and has agreed to work together with Provo, commissioners say one project is not exclusive to the other. Because Pleasant Grove is asking only for taxes generated within their project site, the county could approve both convention centers.

Because Provo is asking the county to partner with them in constructing a public convention center in the city, the project would then draw from taxes from across the county.

"There's no question that we do have a joint interest in continuing to look at what we started (with Provo)," said Commissioner Larry Ellertson. "Now it's the next step to say, 'Where do we go from here, how do we get there.'"
