This week's chilly temperatures and early snow have prompted The Road Home to open its winter shelter a week ahead of schedule.
The Road Home announced Thursday that it had opened its emergency homeless shelter, which has room for 30 families and 200 single men. The shelter was to open Wednesday, but cold weather prompted The Road Home to make it available to area homeless sooner.
The Midvale facility, located at 529 W. 7300 South, will remain open until April 1. It is available to anyone who needs shelter, including many people on the main shelter's waiting list. The Road Home is currently seeking donations for the emergency facilityf+t, and is particularly in need of blankets, sheets, coats and socks. Donated items can be dropped off directly at the Midvale shelter.
The Road Home also provides winter shelter for up to 100 men a night at the St. Vincent de Paul Center, 437 W. 200 South.
