Last month City Academy celebrated its grand opening at its third and final location in downtown Salt Lake City.

The 7-year-old charter school is one of the oldest charters in the state and was formerly located near Foothill Drive and before that on Redwood Road. Leaders cut the ribbon at the new facility at 555 E. 200 South, a building the school will eventually own.

School officials say they have long awaited an opportunity to engage students directly with Salt Lake City's business and cultural community.

Now students will be able to conveniently attend arts and performing arts events, conduct research at a state-of-the-art library facility, become more involved with the city's social and political scene and participate in a diverse array of academic service learning opportunities.

Monica Daly, spokeswoman for City Academy, said the school hopes to create partnerships with downtown businesses and organizations, creating learning and service opportunities for students.

The academy will also be opening up their after-school program to the community outside of the school in hopes to fill a need for many children in the inner-city area.

"We want to be part of downtown revitalization," Daly said. "We are offering good quality secondary education to people who live and work downtown."

City Academy is a 7-12 school that provides traditionally smaller class sizes and has an emphasis on service learning.

The school promotes democratic learning and is a First Amendment school that relies on active participation from all students, staff and parents in hopes of shaping responsible, active citizens.
