UHP to boost its patrols for Halloween weekend

Law enforcers across the state will be out in force this weekend through Tuesday looking for adults committing devilish deeds and for those who have had too many spirits at Halloween parties.

The Utah Highway Patrol will have extra troopers on duty all weekend for DUI saturation patrols. The goal is to avoid having any nightmares on Utah's streets.

"The World Series is going, there's a lot of college football, work parties, social club partiers ... a lot of times (some adults) get out of control," said UHP Sgt. Ted Tingey.

While many people drink responsibly, there are those who still choose to drink and drive. Added into the mix of a potential tragedy happening that night is the fact many more children will be out, walking around after dark.

"Some people don't think of the consequences (of drinking and driving)," Tingey said.

Nationally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that more than 40 percent of motor vehicle fatalities on Halloween night in 2005 were alcohol related.

Many agencies say Halloween has actually become more of an adult celebration and the little ghosts and goblins going door-to-door looking for treats is just a small part of it.

Police are also issuing a few safety reminders for those who do trick or treat.

• Carry a flashlight

• Travel in groups and with an adult if possible

• Stay on the sidewalk

• Stay in familiar neighborhoods

• Parents should inspect their children's candy before it is eaten

Wearing reflective clothing or a reflective sticker or accessory is also encouraged for better visibility.
