Salt Lake City, for too long, has had a fetish of tearing down our city fabric for parking lots and bland facilities. It is these older, mature buildings of a timeless grace that creates the magic that draws people to the city. How many people do you see all upset about the destruction of the ZCMI Center, Crossroads Plaza and Key Bank building?
Why do people go to Paris, London, New York and San Francisco? Is it because they have great modern mega-malls? It is no mystery office rents are easily twice and three times as much in these cities than in their surrounding suburbs. Office rents in Salt Lake City are no different than the burbs. Big flashy, scaleless, nondescript buildings will not solve that.
