The fourth keynoter, Dr. James Patterson of Oregon Health and Sciences University, also emphasized continuing education and board certification as factors in boosting the quality of care.
The CHEST conference has brought in about 4,000 physicians and others from all over the world representing various chest-related specialties, from cardiologists and pulmonologists to allergists and sleep experts. Among the hot topics are the increasing prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bioterrorism and disaster planning, genetics of disease and treatment advances in various specialties.
Between sessions, the attendees packed into the exhibit hall to see everything from the latest design in a vibrating vest to beds that are angled to aid breathing and a new medication to help smokers stop. There are also dozens and dozens of poster presentations from around the world.
The six-day conference ends Thursday.
