Preps of the week

SAUSAN SHAKERIN, Alta: Like he's done virtually every week this year, Alta's "Shak" ran all over Taylorsville's defense last week.

The Hawks' junior running back finished with 192 yards and two touchdowns on just 23 carries in a 21-7 win over the Warriors.

At the start of the year, Alta coach Les Hamilton said, "He is a junior with break-away speed. He was on the championship 4x100 track team, and if he gets into the open, watch out. If he can stay healthy, he could be one of the top players in the state."

He's rushed for 1,135 yards on 105 carries this year, good enough for first in Class 5A and third place in the state.

AMANDA PEART, Rich: This senior outside hitter recently led the Rebels to one of the program's biggest victories.

"She had 39 kills in the win over Skyline," said head coach Cindy Stuart. "As far as wins go, that ranked right up there with the best of them."

Peart, a three-time state track champion, worked hard in the offseason to become the team's leading hitter. Her efforts have helped the Rebels to a No. 1 ranking and a 21-3 season thus far that includes beating much larger programs like Skyline's. Peart is averaging 15 kills per game.

"She's one in a million," said Stuart. "She is a leader by example. She works very hard, and she's funny. She's just the best ever."
