Medieval Fest set at UVSC
Growing event moves to a new location
The festival may become an annual event at UVSC. Previously the festival was held at the Provo City Library under the direction of the Provo Arts Council, said Barbara Hammond, assistant dean for external relations for the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
"They literally outgrew it," she said.
Last year more than 1,500 people showed up. Security wouldn't let more than that in the door, she said.
So this year the fields in front of the events center will take on the trappings of an authentic medieval festival.
"Our goal is to re-create a family experience with the fun and merriment of medieval times," Hammond said.
The festival will include a re-enactment of the 1215 signing of the Magna Carta.
Costumed vendors will sell medieval wares, while UVSC theater students re-enact stories from Chaucer. Also scheduled are medieval poetry readings, demonstrations of calligraphy by the Utah Calligraphy Association and a pavilion with displays and presentations from the Society for Creative Anachronism.
An authentic medieval feast will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Centre Stage in the Sorensen Center.
The event is presented by the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, along with Utah Medieval Festival founder Karen Martin and Darin Anderson of Lords of the Lance, a medieval re-enactment group.
