Deseret News Ski and Snowboard schools

Dates for the 59th edition of the Deseret Morning News Ski and Snowboard schools have been set.

The three sessions will be Nov. 18, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Each class will run for about two hours.

Cost of the three classes will be $35. Applications for the ski school will be printed in next Thursday's Outdoor section.

The three ski classes will be held at Alta, and the three snowboard classes will be held in split sessions at Snowbird.

Canyon Sports will be offering special rental packages for Ski School students for both skis and snowboards. Students are able to pick up equipment prior to the first class and return it after the final session.

The ski program will be limited to 400 students, the snowboard school to 300 students.

The schools are intended for first-time skiers and snowboarders ages 8 and older. This means skiers and snowboarders who have yet to feel the crunch of snow underfoot or the feeling of exhilaration that comes from moving while standing perfectly still — same as the Olympians, only a little slower in the beginning.

The programs open with basic introductions to skiing and snowboarding. By the third class, students will be introduced to the chair lift. Also, by the third lesson, students should be able to negotiate linked turns on a beginner slope.

Those teaching the classes will be professional instructors from Alta, Snowbird and the University of Utah.

Over the years, the ski and snowboard schools have proven to be an excellent opportunity for families to get involved in winter sports. The schools have also been an opportunity for parents to introduce their children to a winter activity.
