Timeline: Recent downtown mall history

Throughout 2002: Meier & Frank at ZCMI Center undergoes $20 million renovation.

March 2003: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announces it has reached an agreement to buy Crossroads Plaza from mall operator Foulger Pratt. (Church already owns nearby ZCMI Center.)

March 2003: Plans announced for the estimated $24.5 million renovation of Gateway Tower East.

September 2003: Property Reserve Inc., the church's real estate arm, closes on Crossroads Plaza purchase.

October 2003: Church announces it will spend "hundreds of millions of dollars" on the construction and redevelopment of Salt Lake's two Main Street malls, preliminary plans of which include high-rise residential towers, underground parking and glass-topped shopping areas. Demolition is expected to begin in mid-2004, with construction expected to take three to four years.

August 2004: After years of complaining about its Crossroads Plaza location and threatening to leave, Nordstrom announces it will remain.

March 2005: Renovation of Gateway Tower East begins. Project is completed in 2006, and building is renamed the Zions Bank Building.

March 2006: Mervyns closes at Crossroads Plaza.

July 2006: Borders closes at Crossroads Plaza, leaving only a handful of stores still operating in that mall.

September 2006: Meier & Frank at ZCMI Center becomes Macy's.

October 2006: Church unveils plans for redevelopment of the two downtown malls.
